"There is nothing more frustrating than when the garage door gets stuck and won't open. The most common condition that can cause this is a broken hinge or cable. Unfortunately, most homeowners don't have the proper tools to get up there and repair it themselves as they would like to do so. "The proper repair is complicated and may require a licensed technician to come out and fix it. If you are handy, you can attempt to fix it yourself, but be very careful with your tools. You can always have them come out and take care of it so that the garage door won't become jammed again.
Garage Door Hinge Repair & Overhead Door Hinge Repair
How a garage door hinge works:
A garage door hinge is a metal plate or bar with one end attached to the garage door and the other end attached to the overhead section of the garage that holds it up. The plate is usually mounted on a T track or barrel; this allows it to open and close.
The hinges are designed for both vertical and horizontal use. A standard double-hung window has two sets of hinges on either side of the glass, one set for each glass panel. The door on a standard single garage has one set of hinges on either side to support the garage door's weight. Some doors have a metal plate mounted in the center; this acts as extra support for the middle of the door.
A typical two-car garage has a double set of hinges on each side of each door, one set is for support, and the other set allows you to open and close the garage door. If you have a side-mounted garage door, there is only one set of hinges.
Garage door hinge problems:
Most garage doors will last for years without any problems at all. Two common conditions can contribute to a broken garage door hinge. The first issue is that the hardware, screws, or studs that hold the base of the hinge to the door frame can become loose over time and result in a broken hinge. If the loose hardware is not tightened correctly, it can come off entirely, resulting in lost hardware or damage to the garage door.
The second possible problem is the barrel screw; this is what attaches the T-track to the hinge plate. The barrel screw will work itself loose and can break away from the T-track or even rip right out of it. If this happens and you don't take care of it, you will have other problems with your garage door opening and closing correctly.
Causes of broken garage door hinges:
The most common cause of a broken garage door hinge is the door jumping off its track. When this happens, it will hit the side of the garage and will do so hard enough that it can break the hinge. Another common reason for a broken hinge is when children or pets try to play with or jump on the garage door. If they are doing so and they go too far, they may hit its side with their head or foot. This will break the hinge, resulting in a broken garage door.
In some cases, you might find that the door won't open. This can be caused by a safety mechanism that is no longer working. Another reason could be a broken cable or track on the garage door itself.
